Welcome to what will be the last bulletin before the Christmas break! We wish you all a wonderful Christmas season, truly focused on Him and His love to us.
This week was a special week as we heard testimony from Megan and Jourdan, who have been volunteering at the Nazareth Village since the summer. We wish Jourdan and Megan all the best as they return to the USA and pray that they will continue to learn from Him through their experiences, applying all that they have learned through being here and encouraging and inspiring others.
Coming to Nazareth Megan had expectations about what she was coming to. She envisioned a “mission trip” involving street evangelism or other forms of outreach. Being in Nazareth ended up quite different for Megan and it took her time to readjust.
A verse which she had read before coming to Nazareth is from Micah 6:8, which says “He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”
Coming on a mission trip, many people expect to become closer to God, because they are abroad and preaching Jesus. But the reality for Megan was not one of sneaking Jesus into conversations in order to witness to others, but one of learning obedience to Him.
1 Samuel 15:22 says:
“So Samuel said: “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams.”
Through this verse, Megan learned about obedience and making even her time alone into time which was glorifying to God. She had to learn how to spend time, time when she was not really doing anything, into time which glorified Him. In a situation where there was often no easy way to be busy and active for God, she learned a different way, to serve Him in inactivity too.
Joshua 1: 8 – 9
“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
These verses show the commissioning of Joshua and tell him that he needs to have God’s words in his mouth and heart at all times. During Jourdan’s time in Nazareth, he has learned what it is to meditate on the word of God. It has been a growing experience to know that it is to spend time with God and read His word.
Reading these verses, God tells Joshua to be strong and not be afraid. Sometimes there are things in our lives which can be scary, but He is with us. As Jourdan came to Nazareth uncertain of what to expect, or of what God’s plans were for this time, these verses helped him come here in confidence.
Being here also helped with meditating on God’s word, particularly in Psalms. Silence and listening to what God wants to say as well as meditating and memorizing Scripture meant that he really knew what it was to have God’s word in his mouth. It is key not only to have the book of the Bible but to have this word in our hearts. Our Christian life is not only about activity and preaching, but about being still and listening to Him.
