About The Nazareth Trust

Outside the Hospital Emergency Room looking towards Mount Tabor

For over 150 years we have been 'Healing in the Name of Jesus' in Nazareth. What started as a humble clinic with 4 beds has grown to become Nazareth's General Hospital sitting high on 25 acres of Nazarene hillside we have owned since 1906.

For nearly 90 years our School of Nursing has offered an open doorway to all young people from the Nazareth area, preparing them for a life of service and care for others.

At the bottom of our hillside sits the 'Nazareth Village' . Here, 500 metres from the original centre of Nazareth, Jesus' parables come to vivid life in an archaeologically and historically accurate portrayal of rural life in New Testament times.

Nazareth Hospital EMMS

Known since it opened on its present site in 1921 as 'The English Hospital', Nazareth Hospital EMMS retains its unique Christian identity. It is named for the 'Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society', which owned and ran our service in Nazareth from 1862 - 2004.

Nazareth Village

In 1995 a wine press was unearthed, hewn out of the bedrock on the hillside below the Hospital.

On investigation by archaeologists, it was discovered to date to the 1st Century AD.

Volunteers in Action

Volunteering in Nazareth

There is a long tradition of volunteers of all ages coming to Nazareth from many countries to help in our work.

Volunteers play a crucial role in the life of the community on our campus. They come in order to give - but often find they receive much much more!

Doctor Kaloost Vartan - the founder of our work in Nazareth

History of The Nazareth Trust

In 1861, when Doctor Kaloost Vartan arrived in Nazareth, average life expectancy was 22 years for males, and 24 years for females. The dispensary he set up was the only 'hospital' between Jersualem, Damascus and Beirut.
